Obituary of George M. West

George Mickrel West, Sr., 81, of Gainesville, passed away February 20, 2024, at his home, Wheeler Terrace, in Gainesville.

George was born May 10, 1942, in Floydada, TX to Arvin and Bonnie West.  He married the love of his life, Roxie Sloan, on July 8, 1960.  They were married 46 years and raised two boys, of whom they were very proud.

George supported his family by being a machinist, retiring from Valenite after more than 30 years of employment there.  George loved to go dancing and singing karaoke with Roxie and friends over the years, as well as his all-time favorite hobby, playing those slot machines!

George is predeceased by his parents; siblings; wife, Roxie West; and oldest son, Mike West.

George is survived locally by son, Johnny West and wife, Melissa; grandsons Josh West and Slayter West; and great-granddaughter, Bentley West, all of Gainesville.  He is also survived by grandchildren Jake West, Reba Hale, Daniel West, and Dallas West, as well as numerous other great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Meador Funeral Home in Gainesville on Friday, February 23, 2024, at 10:00 am with the service immediately following at 11:00 am.  Burial will be at Mount Zion Cemetery in Thackerville.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of Wheeler Terrace.  George received the very best care during his time there, most especially in his last days.  Everyone at Wheeler, both staff and residents, were like family to him.  Thanks also to Solaris Hospice for their outstanding care and kindness.
