June 27, 1933 – April 10, 2018 Gainesville – Corene (Wommack) Proffer was born June 27, 1933 to Eustace Dare and Cora Ann (Washington) Wommack in Marietta, Texas. She was raised in Naples, Texas, the youngest of 10 children and attended Paul H. Pewitt School, where she graduated in 1951. She moved to Dallas and met her future husband Dalton thru his cousin Doris whom she was living/working with at the time. She married Jerry Dalton (J.D.) Proffer on December 21, 1952, at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Gainesville. She worked as a bank teller in Dallas and later in Ft. Worth and Denton, Linda Jo’s, Ken Blanton Insurance, a bookkeeper at Waples Painter, and at Cooke County Junior College. She retired in 1995 from Weber Aircraft after 17 years and settled into being a housewife. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and enjoyed having them stay in the summertime at her home! She enjoyed going to Tops with her sisters, Faye Crouch and Ida Kesseler for many years, having served as secretary. After retiring, she traveled with her husband Dalton for several years. She also served as secretary for many years at Tabernacle Baptist Church where she was a member since 1964.
She is survived by her husband of 65 yrs, Dalton, of the home. She is also survived by son, Jerry Don and wife, Gwenna of Gainesville, son, Stanley Dwayne and wife, Kathy of Austin, daughter, Rhonda Sue Hise and husband, Larry of Wichita Falls, son, Rodney Glenn and wife, Laura of Denton, 16 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Ida Kesseler of Sanger, and numerous nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters– Geneva Shaw, Faye Crouch, Lois Butts, and Joyce Phillips, and brothers J.D. Wommack, Pete Wommack and two younger brother who died early in life. She was also preceded in death by one grandchild, Jessica Leigh Hise, and three Great-grandchildren Raynee Grace Sills, Jack Connor Sills and baby Proffer.
The Visitation will be prior to the service starting at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2018, with funeral services starting at 2:00 p.m. at Meador Funeral Home in Gainesville with burial following in Fairview Cemetery in Gainesville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church, and the Alzheimer’s Association.
