Verna Jean Turnage Evans, 85, passed away on October 14, 2018. She was born on January 23, 1933, to Vernon Turnage and Beatrice (Moses) Turnage. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on October 20, 2018, at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 401 S. Crockett, Sherman, Texas. Graveside service will be held at 11:30 am at Fairview Cemetery in Gainesville, Texas.
Born and raised in Gainesville, Texas, she was part of a very close family with holidays celebrated with grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins.

Growing up she loved school, reading, writing poetry, family frontier stories, playing tennis and singing with family and played accordion for civic groups and weekly radio program. As an adult she enjoyed books, music, tennis, pets, singing old songs and exploring country roads with family.

She married Scott Evans at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Gainesville, February 4, 1955. They then lived in Sherman, Texas, where their children were born and baptized at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.

Verna graduated from Gainesville High School and earned a B.A. in Music Education at Southeastern State College and a Master of Library Science at North Texas State.

She was music teacher and school librarian for over 20 years.

Verna retired in Sherman in 2002.

She is survived by two daughters, Laurie Frantz (Doug) of Sante Fe, NM; Erin Cook (Randy) of Anna, Texas; son Kirk Evans (Maureen Lawler) Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Evan Cook, Rachael Cook and Bryan Cook; two great-grandchildren Kenzie Cook and Ainsley Cook; step-sister Ora Lee Leeth of Stephenville, Texas

She was preceded in death by her parents and step-father Garland Weatherly.

In lieu of flowers the family is asking for donations to be made to Fisher Center for Alzemier’s Research Foundation.
