January 22, 1926 –  March 24, 2011  Roy Eugene Maglaughlin, age 85, passed away on March 24, 2011 at his farm in Collinsville, Texas. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Meador Funeral Home in Whitesboro.Gene, as he has always been known, was born on January 22, 1926 in Tioga, the second son of Johnny and Jewel Maglaughlin. He was raised in Tioga and Collinsville and graduated from Collinsville High School in 1942 at the age of 16. At the age of 17, with his parents consent, Gene joined the U. S. Navy. He proudly served as a submarine torpedo-man on the U.S.S. Pilotfish and was in Tokyo Harbor when the Japanese surrendered in 1945, ending WWII. He finished his carreer on the submarine U.S.S. Segundo. Gene returned to Collinsville in 1947, where he lived for the duration of his life.
Gene Maglaughlin considered himself a successful man. He lived his life pretty much as he wanted, happily with no regrets, as a farmer, son, husband, father, grandfather and friend to everyone around him. Gene married Peggy Sue Light, the love of his life, on November 21, 1947. They celebrated their 63rd anniversary this past November. Together they raised five children. Gene considered his children his biggest success as they became productive and independent citizens of this great country.
Gene worked very hard raising his family as a farmer and dairyman. To supplement these two jobs, he also worked as the first manager of the Texoma Peanut Company in Whitesboro. After the children were raised, Gene was able to indulge in two of his passions, trail riding and flying. After retirement, he was involved with the Retired Submariners Organization and was an honored guest at the commissioning of the U.S.S Texas.
Gene is survived by his family: wife, Peggy Sue Maglaughlin of Collinsville, TX; son, Alan Maglaughlin and wife, Elise, of Bremerton, WA; daughter, Susan Carney and husband, Bobby, of Collinsville; daughter, Mary Jo Davis and husband, Terry, of Collinsville; son, SSG (retired) Robert Maglaughlin and wife, Karen, of Clarksville, TN; son, Lt. Barry Maglaughlin and wife, Kate of Alexandria, VA; brothers, Ralph Maglaughlin and wife, Arlene, of Collinsville; Edward Phillip Maglaughlin and wife, Sue, of Denton; and sister, Peggy Jo Melvin, and husband, Harold, of Laurel, MS.
Also surviving Gene are his grandchildren: Jerry Jo Belyea, Gage Davis, Richard Maglaughlin, Bobby Maglaughlin, Larry Carney and Elizabeth Maglaughlin (due in August). Gene has 7 great-grandchildren and another one due in June.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Johnny and Jewel Maglaughlin, as well as a sister, Johnny Louise (Doll) Robison.
Services are to be held at Meador Funeral Home on March 28 at 10:00 a.m. officiated by Ricky Patterson and David Davenport. Family visitation will be at the funeral home March 27 from 7 – 8 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Larry Bice, Chico Light, Jerry Davis, Gage Davis, Bobby Maglaughlin, Paul Belyea ,Richard Maglaughlin and Randy Thomas
