Mary Ellen “Rags” Phelps, 95, of Whitesboro, Texas slipped into the arms of Jesus on Friday, January 7, 2022 at Just Like Home in Whitesboro.
Mrs. Phelps was born on November 6, 1926 in Sadler, Texas, the third daughter of John William (Bill) Holley and Lorene Adams Holley. She married her cowboy sweetheart Billy Bob Phelps on May 23, 1946. They spent 61 years together until his passing on July 4, 2007. Mary worked locally for 35 years at various places around Whitesboro. She loved to volunteer, and she delivered Meals on Wheels for several years. Mary volunteered at the library book sales, and she helped transport the elderly to doctor’s visits or to other appointments and to the grocery stores. She was helpful to many with her patience and kindness.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Lorene Holley, her husband, BB Phelps, son, Robert (Geno) Phelps, sisters, Violet Fowler, Wanda Davis, Anna Belle Holley and her brother, John W. Holley Jr. who was killed in action while in Guam in July 1944.
Mary is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her honor to the charity of your choice or to First Baptist Church of Whitesboro at 124 Center St. Whitesboro, TX 76273.
Funeral Services honoring Mary will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, January 13, 2022 at First Baptist Church of Whitesboro, officiated by Rev. Mike Flanagan and Rev. Rick Carney. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. A time of visitation for family and friends will be held at Meador Funeral Home of Whitesboro on Wednesday, January 13, 2022 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Rags, you’re a wonderful person and so caring. I will miss you so much. We had so many great times and vacations together. Love Always

Rags, you were the only Grandmother I ever knew. We always joked that just because Geno and Betty divorced it did not mean we had to divorce, too! You gave me the absolute best memories of my childhood. You were generous to a fault, and taught me a love of animals and a respect for all of God’s children. There is not a holiday that goes by that I don’t think of they amazing feasts your always lovingly prepared. We were both creative writers and loved poetry, too. I cannot tell you how much I miss you. I know you and Robert Eugene aka “Geno” are up there having a good time with BB. See you on the other side. Love Marsha R Lowe
