Martha Rose Abernathy, 95, of Sherman (formerly of Gordonville and Irving, Texas) passed peacefully at home into God’s arms on Sunday, April 23, 2023.
Martha was born in Fort Worth on October 7, 1927 to George C. and Florence A. (Knox) McCarty. She married Dan Clyde Abernathy on August 31, 1947 in Keller, Texas. She was a member of Western Heights Church of Christ. Martha worked in accounting in the Dallas and Gainesville areas. She was an accomplished artist who enjoyed painting and crocheting. Martha loved her family and cherished the time spent with them all, especially her grandchildren and all of the great and great-great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Rosemary Bruce and husband, Keith of Gordonville; daughter, Dana Colston of Sherman; grandchildren, Kevin Bruce and wife, Mercedes of Panama City, Fl.; Kaci Sisk and husband, Jack of Gordonville; Amanda Willis and husband, Josh of Denton; sisters, Mary Martin of Waxahachie; and Rita Wood of Midlothian; ten great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents, George and Florence McCarty, her husband of 42 years, Dan Abernathy, brother, Robert L. McCarty of Waco, and sister, Patricia Mitchell of Midlothian.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Bruce, Landan Beckham, Darren Beckham, Jakob Homberg, Brody Bruce, and Trace Baker.
Funeral services honoring Martha will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at Meador Funeral Home of Whitesboro. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Whitesboro. A time of visitation for friends and family will be held at 1:30 PM on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at the funeral home.
