December 4, 1918 –  April 21, 2014  JOHN THOMAS SANDERS, JR.WHITESBORO – Funeral services for John Thomas Sanders, Jr., 95, will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2014, at 2:00 p.m., at the Meador Funeral Home Chapel in Whitesboro, Texas with Gene Deckard officiating. Interment will follow the services at Dixie Cemetery in Whitesboro. Visitation services will be held on Wednesday, April 23, at the funeral home, from 6:00-7:00 p.m..
He passed away on Monday, April 21, 2014, at Texas Health Presbyterian-WNJ in Sherman, Texas.
John was born on December 4, 1918 in Hagerman, Texas to John Thomas, Sr. and Martha (Shires) Sanders. He married Nelda McDonnell on October 12, 1940. They were high school sweethearts and were married for 73 years. John served his country as a veteran of World War II. He spent most of his life tending and farming the soil. He received the Whitesboro Peanut Farmer Heritage Award in 2010. He was proud to have worked in the Civil Conservation Corp. (CCC) during 1938-1939. He was a member of the Dixie Baptist Church and a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother. He was a loyal and trusted friend to many. He liked to talk and never met a stranger. He had lived in the Dixie Community for 73 years.
He is survived by his wife, Nelda Sanders, of Whitesboro; son, John M. Sanders, and his wife, Sandra; son, Jerry T. Sanders, and his wife, Vivian; daughter, Donna Harris, and her husband, John; granddaughters: Jessica Arrington, and husband, Jason; Lisa Stratta, and husband, Chris; and Laura Sanders and fiancé, Ramiro Garza; grandson, Brian Harris, and wife, Emily; great-grandchildren: Joey, Charlie, and Madeline Stratta; Ethan, Logan, and Calvin Arrington; and Maxx and Abby Harris; sisters: Opal Crain and Estelle Vance; several nieces and nephews and extended family; and a host of good friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John, Sr. and Martha Sanders; his sisters: Faye Gargus, Alpha Short, and Hazel Milliken; and his brother, Freeman Sanders.
