John was born on September 3, 1951 in Colorado City, Texas to Johnny and Willie Lou (Cherry) McBroom. He was a truck driver by trade.

Survivors include a daughter, Sherry McDonald of Allen; sister, Barbara Rives of Collinsville; 3 brothers, Dean McBroom of Springer,Oklahoma, Aubery McBroom of Westbrook, Texas and Johnny W. McBroom of Phoenix, Arizona.
