November 18, 1922 –  February 24, 2016  James Weldon WestJames Weldon West went to be with his Lord Wednesday February 24, 2016 in Gainesville, Texas at age 93 surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 18, 1922 in the Dexter community of Cooke, County Texas to James Hamilton and Eula Mae Bell West. The family moved to west Texas by covered wagon in 1925 where he attended schools in Sligo and Plains, Texas. The family returned to the Gainesville area in December, 1939. Mr. West was a WWII Veteran enlisting in the Army Air Corp in 1942 serving as a Military policeman with the Army Air Corp in both the U. S. and Asiatic Pacific Theaters. He served 17 months at Ladd Field outside of Fairbanks, Alaska. After his military service he was offered the position of Chief of Police in Fairbanks, Alaska, however, missing his family in Texas, he chose to return home. He married Emma Jo Talbott on May 27th 1948 in Gainesville, Texas. They were married 66 years. He was ordained as a deacon in 1956 and served the Lord many years as Sunday school director and teacher, music Director and an usher. He was a faithful member of Temple Baptist Church. Weldon owned and operated the West Farm and Garden Supply in Gainesville. Upon retiring in 1986 he continued his lifelong love of gardening, tending an orchard, and cattle ranching. He loved the Lord, his family, helping others and sharing his homegrown bounty.
He is survived by his son Timothy West; daughter and son-in-law Sue and Ed Carrigan of Tioga, TX; brothers, Leslie West and wife Evelyn of Callisburg, TX, Louis West of Taylor, TX; sister, Laverne Brown and husband Dorris of Corinth, TX and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim & Eula Mae West brothers, Wayne West, Marvin West and Leroy West, and sisters, Opal Hobbs, Fay Harendt and Lucille Harendt.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 29th at Temple Baptist church with Dr. Eddie Chennault and Rev. Larry Huffman officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Meador Funeral Home. There will be a viewing prior to the funeral service from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.
