Jim was born on a Friday, February 18, 1927, in Savenburg, Kansas. He was one of seven children born to Logan and Stella Herod. His family eventually moved to Chouteau, Oklahoma where he spent his early school days.

His family moved to Tulsa, OK in 1935. It was there he met his future bride, Marvella. They lived across the street from one another when they were in elementary school and began writing letters to each other when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 at the age of 15. He proudly served from 1942-46, where he participated in the invasion of Guam. He married Marvella Downing on April 13, 1946 in Tulsa, OK., and they enjoyed sixty- seven years of marriage. Most of his working career was spent at Kraft Foods, where he retired after 40 years of service.

He was a very dedicated Christian and served as a deacon at Eastern Hills Baptist Church, Garland, Texas, and the First Baptist Church of Gordonville. He loved his church family and was tremendously thankful for their friendship, guidance, and love.

He enjoyed the outdoors and spending his last eight years living in the country. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 23, 2013, at 10 a.m. in the First Baptist Church of Gordonville, TX. Interment will follow the services at Gordonville Cemetery. All service arrangements are under the direction of Meador Funeral Home in Whitesboro. Visitation services will be Friday, November 22, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

He passed away on November 20, 2013 in Denison, Texas. He is survived by his wife, Marvella, of Gordonville; daughter, Jan Wilson and husband, Hugh, of Gordonville; son, David Herod, of Greenville; granddaughter, Michelle Drew and husband, Floyd; and great-grandchildren: Nathan, Sarah, and Rachel Drew.

Pallbearers will be Hugh Wilson, Floyd Drew, Nathan Drew, Dean Dorthy, Keith Hughes, Clarence Jones, and Jim Crocker.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the First Baptist Church of Gordonville, Youth Fund, P. O. Box 608, Gordonville, TX 76245.
