James Davis Anderson, age 82, passed from this life on June 30, 2018, at Cal Cam Hospital in Sulphur, LA. In his new residence he joins his parents, James Dace and Ethel Davis Anderson, son, James David Anderson, mother of his children and wife for 41 years Nannette Cummings Anderson, great granddaughter Ayla Grace Knight and step-daughter, Melinda Dunham. He is survived by two sisters, Jen Carter and Beth ( Jim) Heatherly, both of Wildarado, TX, four daughters, Leslie (Tommy) Neal, Whitesboro, TX, April Loewen, Sherman, TX, Amber (Jason) Traxler, Sanger, TX, Melanie Anderson, New York, New York, one step-son, John (Heather) Dunham and wife, Virginia Puerta Dunham Anderson. He was Pappy to 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was born March 26, 1936 in Amarillo, Texas during the great Texas Dust storm, graduated from Vega High School in 1954 and joined the US Army, serving from 1954 to 1957. He was always proud to have served his country. After receiving his bachelor’s degree from West Texas A & M, Jim began working for the National Park Service. His teaching career began in Nevada , having served as teacher, principal and coach with the Tonapah and Beatty Independent School Districts . His Texas teaching experiences included one year at Era and 22 years as teacher and principal with the Lindsay ISD. While at Beatty, he was recognized as Nevada’s State Coach of the Year; however, he was equally proud of working with good students and watching them become successful citizens and continued to keep in touch with many of his students.
While in Whitesboro, Jim was an active member and deacon of First Baptist Church. He participated in the weekly Men’s Bible Study, was a Sunday School teacher and was loyally committed to the Tec Nos Pos Navajo Mission Ministry making many trips to Arizona with the Men’s Group to work on projects.
Jim was also an active member of Houston River Baptist Church in Sulphur, LA serving as a deacon and teacher of the Adult Maverick Sunday School Class. He was an outstanding Bible scholar loving the Word of God and sharing through Bible lessons God’s plan. His latest Bible study with his Sunday School class was A Place Called Heaven. He would say to his class and those who loved him what was taught in his lessons, “Be prepared, Heaven is too great to miss!”
A memorial service led by Pastor Lonnie Gothrop, will be held at Houston River Baptist Church on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at 7 P.M. Visitation will be from 5 – 7 P.M. at Houston River Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 6, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. in Whitesboro, Texas at Meador Funeral Home with Hank Lovejoy officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, July 5, 2018 from 6-8 P.M. at the home of Leslie and Tommy Neal, 1092 Orchard Rd., Whitesboro, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Deacon’s Benevolence Fund at Houston River Baptist Church, 110 W. Houston River Rd., Sulphur, LA 70663 or Milburn – Price Culture Museum, 1005 Coke St., Vega, TX 79092 or to the charity of one’s choice.
