July 13, 1927 –  November 11, 2015  James Calvin “Buster” Miller, beloved father and Chapman University Professor Emeritus, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 11, 2015. Jim was born to Cecil and Exie Miller on July 13, 1927, in Collinsville, Texas. He married Barbara Houck on June 19, 1953. They had two sons, Gregg and Reade. Proud to serve his country, Jim was a veteran of the US Coast Guard and the US Marine Corps, serving during WWII and the Korean War. Jim earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees at the University of North Texas. He joined the Chapman University staff as an associate professor of English in 1956. While there, he had 13 different offices and taught classes in seven departments. His teaching career spanned 47 years. He has often been referred to as a “legend” at Chapman, demonstrating a love of teaching that also reflected his passion for history. Jim was well known for “Things Mama Said.”Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Barbara, and his brothers and sister. He is survived by his sons Gregg (Elena) and Reade (Lynn), as well as grandchildren Alicia, Richard, James, and Emma. Jim’s infectious smile and sense of humor was a gift he shared with all those who surrounded him. He was truly a giving and caring man. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2015, at the Shannon-Bryan Mortuary in Orange, California from 5:00-9:00 PM. At Jim’s request, a memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church in Collinsville, Texas on Monday, November 23, 2015, at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in the Collinsville Cemetery following the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Cal Farley’s Boys’ Ranch in Amarillo, Texas, a favorite charity of Jim’s. Meador Funeral Home of Whitesboro is in charge of local arrangements.
