June 28, 1929 –  June 7, 2013  WHITESBORO – Funeral services for Jack D. Harwell, 83, will be held Monday, June 10, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the Meador Funeral Home Chapel in Whitesboro, Texas with Rev. Jim Cragg and Rev. Rick Carney officiating. Interment will follow the service at Mt. Tabor Cemetery in Sandusky, Texas. Following services at the cemetery, a luncheon will be held at Bones Chapel Baptist Church in Whitesboro. Visitation services will be held on Sunday, June 9, 2013 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Jack passed away at Texoma Medical Center on Friday, June 7, 2013.
He was born on June 28, 1929 to Robert L. Harwell, Sr. and Vera Braswell Harwell in Grayson County. Jack married Valda Wheeler on September 11, 1947 in Sandusky, Texas; Valda and Jack shared 65 years of marriage together. Since 1957 Jack has been a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Sandusky; he also served as an Elder of the Church there. Jack retired from Kaiser Aluminum after 30 years of employment. He and his wife enjoyed volunteering at “Your Neighbor’s House” for the past eight years. Jack was an outstanding member of the community for many years.
Jack was a loyal husband, father, and friend. He lived and raised his family according to the word of God. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. Jack and Valda read Bible verses every day and he lived for one verse specifically:
“Make it your aim to live a quite life, to mind your own business, and to earn your own living, just as we told you before. In this way you will win the respect of those who are not believers, and you will not have to depend on anyone for what you need.” 1 Thessalonians 4: 11-12
Jack is survived by his wife, Valda Harwell of Whitesboro; daughters, Nova Bates and husband, Joe, of Whitesboro, Dee Gentry and husband, Glenn, of Anna, and Margenia Holloway and husband, Charlie Knight, of Whitesboro; son, Jack A. Harwell and wife, Kassie, of Whitesboro; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Robert L. and Vera Braswell Harwell; brothers, Robert L. Harwell, Jr. and Johnny Mac Harwell; sister, Viola Seiber Walters; and grandson, Steven Douglas Gleaves.
Pallbearers will be Jack’s grandsons: Joe Bates, II, Keith Bates, Charley Gleaves, Val Harwell, Justin Spence, Jason Knight, Matt Goode, Ron Spinks, Brant Cogburn and Brandon Evins.
Honorary Pallbearers are: The Elders of Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Bill Morrow, J.B. Scarbrough, Burl Scarbrough, and John Dennis.
