September 22, 1934 –  March 17, 2012  Wanda L. Martin of Denton, passed away on Saturday March 17, 2012 at the age of 77. Wanda was born on September 22, 1934 in Jolly, Texas to parents John B. and Margaret Barnett. One of three children, Wanda grew up with siblings L.D. Barnett of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Sue Bynum. Graduating from high school in Alvord, Texas, she played basketball and participated in many school activities. Wanda attended Decatur Baptist College in Decatur, Texas before marrying her lifelong companion, Lt. Col. V.W. Martin, Jr. (Ret.) on February 28, 1955. Wanda raised her family while stationed throughout the U.S. and Canada before starting a second career working in the catalog sales department at Sears, Roebuck, and Company in Virginia, and also in Denton after moving back to Texas in 1973. She changed occupations a short time later becoming a travel agent, and worked at various travel agencies in Denton for over 20 years. Wanda loved to travel with her family and friends, especially her memorable trip to visit Israel and The Holy Land. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and she never failed to have the best children’s movies to entertain her grand kids and to feed them well with their favorite dishes, such as deviled eggs, potato salad, and her famous banana pudding. She will be greatly remembered by her friendly and social nature, her love of the spotlight, and her amazing memory of details that only she could recall. Wanda is survived by son Mitchell Martin and wife Judy of Houston, son Victor Martin of Princeton, son Joel Martin and wife Earlayne of Mesquite, granddaughter Delia Martin, grandson Jonathan Martin, granddaughter Kimberly Martin, granddaughter Chelsea Alvarado and husband Chris, granddaughter Lindsey Martin, and grandson Rex Martin. She was predeceased by her parents, John B. and Margaret Barnett, her grandson, Eric Martin, her sister Sue Bynum, and her husband, Lt. Col. V.W. Martin, Jr. (Ret.) after 56 years of marriage. The funeral arrangements are being handled by Clement-Keel Funeral Home. The visitation will be held on Thursday March 22, 2012 at 6 PM at Clement-Keel Funeral Home in Gainesville, Texas. The memorial service will be held at 10 AM on March 23 in the chapel at Good Samaritan Village, located at 2500 Hinkle Drive in Denton, Texas. The burial will follow at 2 PM at Valley View Cemetery in Valley View, Texas. Memorials or donations can be made in her memory to The American Diabetes Association or Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch. Wanda will be missed immensely, and the people she loved will always remember her kindness and generosity.
