April 6, 1911 –  February 23, 2011  WHITESBORO – Funeral services for Velma B. Mayo, 99, will be held Saturday, February 26, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the Meador Funeral Home Chapel in Whitesboro, TX with Rev. Jack Wallace and Rev. Glyn Rives officiating. Interment will follow the service at Oakwood Cemetery. Family visitation will be held Friday, February 25, from 6 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home.Velma passed away on February 23, 2011 in Sherman, Texas.
She was born on April 6, 1911 to William Ross and Lettie (Lawhon) Knight in Lamar County, Texas. She married William Alfred Mayo on November 28, 1928 at the Methodist Parsonage in Whitesboro. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Whitesboro and had attended Sandy Springs Cumberland Presbyterian Church as a child.
She is survived by her daughters: Gladys Sexton, of Whitesboro, TX; Edna Morse and husband, Larry Wayne, of Whitesboro, TX; Aline Conklin, of Ellenville, NY; Doris Reed, of Whitesboro, TX; Betty Cordell, and husband, Daryl, of DeSoto, TX; and Shirley Moore and husband, Eddie, of Tyler, TX; sons: Kenneth Mayo and wife, Retha, of Paducah, TX; and Orville Mayo and wife, Peggy, of Farmersville, TX; a brother, W. R. Knight and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W. A. “Bill” Mayo in 1978; her parents, William and Lettie Knight; her sisters, Thelma Peterson and Willie Karr; a brother, Charles Knight and sons-in-law, Ron Conklin, Billy Reed, and Boyd Sexton; and a granddaughter, Carolyn Flowers.
Pallbearers were Wayne Chisum, James Chisum, Dee Welch, Dennis Hawkins, Mark Pike, and C. B. Brown. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Whitesboro, P. O. Box 378, Whitesboro, TX 76273.
