A graduate of Whitesboro High School, she received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of North Texas. Her mother had died when Ruby was 12, and she helped raise her younger brother and sister, John Caviness and Juarine Caviness Gray. They preceded her in death as did her older sister, Lois Webb. Her brother-in-law, Lt. Col. Don Gray (ret.), lives in Fort Worth.
Recognized as an “Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America in 1973,” she also was honored with the Mirabeau B. Lamar Medal of Honor Award by the Masonic Lodge of Whitesboro and the Founder’s Award from the First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of Rebekah Lodge, Whitesboro History Club, and the West Grayson Retireed Teachers Association. Ruby served as a Deacon and Elder in the Presbyterian Church.
After Ruby’s retirement in 1981, she and Leon bought an RV and traveled to New Mexico, Missouri, and the Texas Valley until his death in 2003. They belonged to the Nortex Good Sam Travel Club. Leon attributed their compatibility and long successful marriage to Ruby’s finally agreeing to go fishing with him in their early courtship. She caught a three-pound bass, he reported, and was hooked from then on.
Ruby and Leon had three children: Janet Harris of Dallas, Joyce Pike of Tucson, and Richard Rogers (deceased) of Albuquerque. Her grandchildren are Lisa Echols of Carrollton,Shannon Rogers of San Diego, and Ben Rogers of Albuquerque. Her great-grandson, Cade Waite lives in Carrollton. Her nieces and nephews include the Rev.
