January 25, 1918 –  March 5, 2018  Rosalie Jay Thornton, 100, passed away peacefully in Lubbock, Texas on Monday, March 5, 2018. Rosalie was born on January 25, 1918 to John Carroll and Mary Gertrude McLauchlin Jay in Petersburg, Texas. She married James Clayton Thornton August 3, 1935, in Floydada, Texas. After farming and raising their family in the Farmer community, Rosalie and Clayton moved to Ralls, Texas in 1955. Rosalie enrolled in cosmetology school and received her beautician’s license. She worked for Benevis Curry Beauty Salon in Ralls and then Alamo Beauty Salon after moving to Lubbock, Texas in 1965. In 1977, Rosalie and Clayton moved to Gordonville, Texas, where they built their retirement home. Even though retired, Rosalie continued to work as a beautician part-time. In 1998, Rosalie moved back to Lubbock, Texas to be closer to family. Rosalie was a devoted wife, mother and friend. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed making special treats for family and neighbors. She was an expert seamstress and loved making clothes for others. Rosalie was always busy doing handwork. She loved crocheting, quilting and needlework. She made afghans, quilts, and embroidered cup towels for all the children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Rosalie is preceded in death by her husband Clayton Thornton, 2 brothers and 5 sisters. Rosalie is survived by her daughter Barbara Robertson of Lorenzo, Texas; her son Dick Thornton and wife Claudia of Lubbock, Texas; 4 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren. Visitation will be Friday, March 9, at Meador Funeral Home in Whitesboro, Texas from 11:30 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Friday, March 9, at Oakwood Cemetery at Whitesboro, Texas with Mike Bentley officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to your favorite charity, church or organization.
