June 25, 1924 –  May 30, 2012  COLLINSVILLE â?? Melvin Jennings Walden passed away at 87 years old on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, in his home surrounded by family and friends. He was born in Hillsboro, Texas, on June 25, 1924 to John P. and Nita (Jennings) Walden. He attended Collinsville High School until joining the Navy. He proudly served 14 months in the Pacific during World War II, earning seven battle stars while on the USS Bryant.He married LaVerne Hutton on December 3, 1948 in Whitesboro, Texas. They had 63 years of marriage. They lived and farmed in Collinsville, Texas. His health had been declining for several years with Diabetes/Alzhiemers. He was one of the oldest members of the First Baptist Church of Collinsville, Texas, and a Sunday school teacher while his health permitted.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and cousin. He liked to be with family and friends and enjoyed going to the coffee shop. He was an avid reader, especially his Bible, while his health permitted.
Surviving are his spouse of 63 years, LaVerne Walden of Collinsville, TX; granddaughter: Candi White and husband, Michael, of Whitesboro, TX; grandson, Heath Roland and wife, Ashley, of Celina, TX; brother, Emmett Walden and wife, Delores, of Columbus, OH; sisters: Dottie Rollins and husband, Jack; and Nelda Haliburton and husband , Mearle, both of Sherman, TX; son-in-law: Gary Roland of Whitesboro, TX; six great-grandchildren: Cole, Austin and Chase White of Whitesboro, TX; and Avery Ann, Landon, and Bailey Roland of Celina, TX; several nieces and nephews; and a host of special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Nita Walden; his daughter, Lana Walden Roland; brothers: Archie Walden and Lowery Walden; and sister, Emma Hall Lusk;

Family visitation will be at Meador Funeral Home in Whitesboro, Texas, on Friday, June 1, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. Graveside services will be held at the Collinsville Cemetery on Saturday, June 2, at 10:00 a.m. with Chaplain Alan Mattingly and Rev. Jerry Davis officiating. All service arrangements are under the direction of Meador Funeral Home.
