May 23, 1943 – December 28, 2017 Larry Ross Matthews left his earthly family on December 28, 2017.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Sue Matthews, his brother Donnie Matthews (Peggy) his children, Cheryl Spann (Joel), Candy Campbell (Mike) and Cathy Huddleston (Randy), grandchildren Tara Reed (Damon), Kinsey Boyd (John Sturm), Chance Huddleston (Caitlyn), Amber Bagley (Jason), Cody Huddleston (Anesa), Casey Martinez, Collin Campbell, Lane Spann, Conner Campbell, Shelby Huddleston, Cadyn Boyd (Ryan), and Sydnee Spann and his great grandchildren, Kalli Reed, Hagen Reed, Braydon Bagley, Keaton Huddleston, Blake Bagley, Kyleigh Dobbs, Charlotte Martinez, Allie Huddleston, and Yates Huddleston. He is also survived by numerous beloved sisters in law, brothers in law, nieces and nephews, cousins and countless
ball players, all over the state.
Larry was born on May 23, 1943 and grew up in Myra, Texas. He roamed the streets of Myra with his cousins and attended Myra Baptist Church with most of them. As a teenager he attended Era High School and told many stories about the people he loved there. Later in life Larry returned to the area settling in Era, Texas to raise his daughters. He loved the community where he lived and the Era First Baptist Church. He never met a stranger, and Carol and he welcomed many into their home. Larry loved everyone and argued with anyone. He was passionate about helping others and spent many days after retiring, delivering meals to homebound residents, visiting people in the hospital and traveling to numerous sporting events to watch players he knew and loved, and many he had never met. His tireless love for sports led him to many football fields, gyms and baseball and softball fields around Texas. Larry loved Jesus and is enjoying a sweet reunion with his Lord and many loved ones who preceded him in death. As one person said, “You’re in the big league now, Larry!”
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 2nd with Rev. Daniel Jones officiating, assisted by Larry’s grandchildren. Interment will follow in Reed Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Meador Funeral Home in Gainesville. Pallbearers will be Chance Huddleston, Cody Huddleston, Lane Spann, Joel Spann, Mike Campbell, Randy Huddleston, Jeremy Matthews and Butch Matthews.
