Internment will follow in Collinsville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 – 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22 at the Collinsville Church of Christ. She passed away on Dec. 21, 2015 at home in Whitesboro surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer. Jacquita was born on Sept. 27, 1939, to Jack L. and Gertie (Lancaster) Hughes in Whitesboro, Texas. Her mother said she did not give her a middle name because she figured ‘Jacquita’ was enough name for anybody. She was a 1958 graduate of Whitesboro High School where she maintained friendships with the majority of her classmates in the many years since graduation. It was a point of pride with Jacquita that she was still able to help plan and attend an annual holiday gathering with her same circle of high school girlfriends well after their 55th high school reunion. She graduated with a BA from Texas Woman’s University where she also later studied for a Master’s Degree. She married Noel Clay Lewter on Aug. 26, 1960, at the North Union Street Church of Christ in Whitesboro. He was late to the ceremony due to a flat tire. Jacquita later said the preacher was concerned as to if Noel was going to show up. She assured him that Noel would be there. It was not unlike him to run late. They were married for 52 years, 10 months and 13 days at the time of his death in 2013.
They made there home in Collinsville and, in 1968, purchased the oldest brick home in town.
After a year of teaching at Callisburg ISD, Jacquita accepted a position at Whitesboro Junior High School where she went on to teach 8th grade English for 20 years. While in the classroom, she was active with the Whitesboro CTA and served as junior high cheerleading sponsor. She then moved down the street to Whitesboro Elementary School where she served as the campus counselor for almost a decade. After retiring from education in 1995, Jacquita went to work as a staff writer at the Whitesboro News-Record until 2000. She reentered the workforce at the newspaper in 2009. She continued there until 2014 when health problems forced a third retirement. She believed everyone had a story worth writing and she made it her business to seek out and tell those stories. During her newspaper career, she received countless civic awards and commendations for community service and community reporting. Jacquita was reared a member of North Union Street Church of Christ and transferred membership to the Collinsville Church of Christ after settling there over 55 years ago. She was an active member of the Wednesday ladies’ Bible study class as well as numerous other classes and committees within the church. Jacquita was also an enthusiastic member of the “Telling Our Stories” writing class. Several of her stories won awards and were published in the group’s annual publication. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Collinsville Education Foundation and, in 1976, was a founding committee member of the Collinsville Pioneer Days. Jacquita was passionate about her family, her community and her church. She was a lifelong learner, teacher, Bible scholar and literary critic. Her family will remember her as their matriarch and their rock. She is survived by her children Layne Clay Lewter and his wife Carrie, of Whitesboro, Gina Noelle Williams and her husband Jon, of Corinth, and Dorsey Jack Lewter and his wife Jo of Collinsville; five grandchildren, Justin Clay Lewter and his wife Alisha, of Tioga, Austin Louis Lewter and his wife Jennifer, of Collinsville, Lucas Layne Lewter and his wife Amber, of Collinsville, Jess Randall Lewter, and Jasmine Christine Lewter; seven great-grandchildren, Jackson, Isabella, Mackenzie, Grace, Carson, Zander and Brooklyn; brother, Shelly L.
