April 25, 1924 –  November 21, 2010  SHERMAN – Howard A. Porter was born in Mitchell, S. Dakota to Leon and Bernice Porter on April 25, 1924. He graduated from High School in Mitchell. Following High School he went into the Army Air Force for approximately three years at various training bases and Okinawa in the South Pacific. After his military service he returned to South Dakota where he joined his father and two brothers in the automobile business. In 1947 he married Joye Bush of Wayne, Nebraska. They had two sons, John and Ralph. He left Mitchell in 1956 and spent several years in the Motel business ending up in Texas where he and his two sons were in the grocery business in Lindsay, Texas and Whitesboro, Texas. Mr. Porter lived in Gainesville, Whitesboro, and Sherman, Texas. He passed away in Sherman, Texas on November 21, 2010 at 4:30 P.M.Mr. Porter was a member of the Congregational Church, VFW, American Legion and Elks Club.
In 1983, Mr. Porter’s first wife, Joye, passed away, and 1984 he met and married Joan Chisum of Altus, Oklahoma who had two children, Jerri Duncan of Denton, TX and Dennis Chisum of Valley View, TX.
He is survived by his wife, Joan of Sherman; sons, John H. Porter of Whitesboro, TX; Ralph L. Porter and wife, Dawn, of Gainesville, TX; Jerri Duncan and husband, Brent, of Denton, TX; Dennis Chisum and wife, Becky, of Valley View, TX; seven grandchildren, Billy Chisum, Christen Arroyave, Tomara Hellinger, Jason Duncan, Brenton Porter, Kelsi McDiffett, and Dylan Chisum; six great-grandchildren, Destiny and Trinity Chisum, Cheyenne Hellinger, Tessa Chisum, Kameron McDiffett, Brendon Hellinger, and Austin Hellinger, and sister-in-law, Vernice Porter.
Mr. Porter was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Joye, and brothers, Maurice and Lester.
Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, November 24, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at the Meador Funeral Home Chapel in Whitesboro, TX, with interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery in Gainesville, TX. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, November 23, from 7 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The pallbearers will be John Porter, Ralph Porter, Dennis Chisum, Brent Duncan, Brenton Porter, and Billy Chisum. Honorary pallbearers are Jason Duncan and Dylan Chisum.
