Friday, June 30, 2006 at West Hill Cemetery in Sherman, Texas officiated by Pastor Steve Miller. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 P.M. Thursday, June 29, 2006 at Meador Funeral Home of Whitesboro.
George E. Nelson Sr. was given into life on September 3, 1925 to Mr. George W. and Mrs. Effie Haney Nelson, in Carmi, Illinois.

After spending his childhood and early adolescence in Carmi (and, eventually, Springfield, Illinois), he enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of seventeen, whereupon (while serving in both the Asiatic Theatre and Philippine Liberation) he, through his valiant and dedicated efforts, received thirteen battle stars. He was honorably discharged from the service on February 19, 1946.

He labored steadily throughout most of his lifetime in various places and positions (though predominantly in the Springfield area as a carpenter), finally retiring from industry after eight years with the State of Illinois.

On June 15, 2006, after eighty years of running, George professed the grace and kingship of Jesus Christ and received Him as his mercifully loving Lord and Savior. He was then peacefully and joyfully received by his Heavenly Father on the morning of June 27, 2006.

He is survived by four children: daughter, Sheila A. and husband Frank R. Williams of the Sadler area, daughter Toni R. and husband Ragan Hatcher of Tucson, AZ, and sons, Eric and George, both of Springfield, IL; fourteen grandchildren and their spouses (including Tasha A. and husband Michael P. Reed of Collinsville, Frank A. Williams and Rachel Miller of Sherman, Lacie R. Williams of Sadler and Joe Hatcher), and various great-grandchildren (including Michael Austin and Mikayla Ann Reed).

He was preceded in death by his son, Mike and beloved wife Shirley Ann.

Those who lovingly mourn the loss of their father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend submit these humble lines in fond memory of a man, and to the glory of the God in whom he trusted.
