November 12, 1921 –  September 7, 2014  WHITESBORO – “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith”, (2 Timothy 4:7). Augustus Bentley (Gus) Green, Jr., 92, passed away on Sunday, September 7th, at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Sherman, Texas. Gus was born in Dallas, Texas to Augustus and Lucy Green on November 12, 1921. He graduated from Crozier Technical School in 1940 and in the same year enlisted in the Army Air Corps.He began his career as a mechanic but soon received his wings in 1943 as one of the few “Flying Sergeants” of WWII. During the war, only 217 sergeant pilots flew overseas combat missions.
He retired from the newly formed U. S. Air Force at the age of 48 after 30 years of service. Gus began a new career with the U. S. Postal Service, where he retired as a maintenance supervisor for another fifteen years retiring again at the age of 63. There was nothing that Gus couldn’t fix.
After his retirement he devoted his energy to the Whitesboro First Baptist Church. He revitalized the Men’s Brotherhood and during his tenure, the Brotherhood helped to build nearly 200 churches in the U. S., Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Granada. The Brotherhood later volunteered service to the Texas Baptist Men’s Disaster Relief which rendered aide for many survivors of earthquakes, floods, and tornados. In 1999, the Grayson Baptist Association awarded Gus the Second Mile Award exemplifying the Spirit of Servanthood taught in Matthew 5:41, and he was named Humanitarian of the Year in 2001 from the State of Texas.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 70 years, Dorothy Green, of Whitesboro; and his two daughters: Carol Archer of Whitesboro and Cindy Lawrence of Pottsboro; sons-in-law: Bob Archer and Bart Lawrence; 5 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; brother, Ray Green; and sister, Hazel Pflueger.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Augustus and Lucy Green; and his brother, Robert Green.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2014, at 10 a.m., in the First Baptist Church of Whitesboro, Texas with Rev. Mike Flanagan officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Oakwood Cemetery in Whitesboro. Visitation services will be held on Tuesday, September 9, from 6-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
The deacons of First Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers. The honorary pallbearers will be Bob Archer, Bart Lawrence, Bart Watson, David Knight, Randall Kimberlin, and Preston Lawrence.
