Audrey Cathryn (Murley) Proffitt, 97, passed away on Sunday, January 2, 2022, at her home in Whitesboro, Texas. She was born to Mary and W.T. Murley on April 11, 1924, in Leonard, Texas.

Audrey attended the Stamps School of Music during the summers as a teenager and was an accomplished pianist, playing music by ear as well as sight-reading written music. She also played the accordion and the organ.  She married Otis Lee Proffitt on November 1, 1942, and they were married for 54 years until his passing in 1997. Audrey spent much of her life as a minister’s wife, and was dedicated to her church and her community. She was a devoted wife to her husband and a loving mother to her daughters.  She continued to keep music as a part of her life. Her daughters recall that road trips meant singing, whether or not they wanted to be involved! Audrey had a talent for cooking and sewing, and enjoyed entertaining members of the family’s church congregation in their home.  She was a faithful member of Commerce Street church of Christ in Gainesville.  She worked at the Whitesboro News Record as a typesetter, and later worked in the office of Dr. Galewaler, and retired from Wilson N. Jones, where she worked in the business office.

Audrey is preceded in death by her husband, Otis Lee Proffitt; parents, Mary and W.T. Murley; daughter, Martha Ann Proffitt; brothers, Thad Murley, T.C. Murley, and Joe Murley; and sister Hazel Leggett.

She is survived by her daughters, Mary Nan Cannon and her husband Jerry of Whitesboro, and Kerry Proffitt of Whitesboro; grandchildren, Patrick Cannon and wife Deirdre of Arlington, Kimberly Rumley of Whitesboro, and Jonathan Cannon and wife Kimberly of Edmond, Oklahoma; great-grandchildren, Aidan, Liam, and Vivian Cannon of Arlington, Andrew, Kaedance, and Conner Rumley of Whitesboro, and Coretta Cannon of Edmond, Oklahoma, as well as many other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at Meador Funeral Home in Whitesboro at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 8, with a graveside service to follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Whitesboro. A family night will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, January 7 at Meador Funeral Home in Whitesboro.
